Choosing a wide variety of books...

While any reading is beneficial to vocabulary development and helps to build writing skills, when reading to your child more benefit comes by selecting books above their reading level. Read to them books they may not be able to read to themselves quite yet.

Historical Fiction -  stories written from a child's perspective of a period in history can make learning about history especially exciting to kids - consider titles including: Esperanza Rising,  Magic Treehouse books, The Little House on the Prairie series, Anne of Green Gables... search "historical fiction" on Sora, or ask the local librarian to show you the Historical Fiction section and recommend a good read for your family!

Informational Books are non-fiction and reference books full of facts and answers. The book covers are typically full of images to entice your reader to open and explore the topic. Your child may be intrigued by weather and storms, natural disasters like volcanoes and earthquakes, or a specific animal, feats of engineering such as skyscrapers or bridges, or even world record books exploring the fastest, strongest, longest, etc.

One goal of reading a wide variety of books is to expand your knowledge base (including your vocabulary) and explore new concepts that will help make connections with learning throughout life.
