bad weather by Daphne Kris this is a non fiction reader essential questions what causes bad weather divided four chapters Chapter 1 what is weather have you ever seen the snow blizzard about a hail storm what about a nice bright sunny day are there maybe any of these weather is what the air is like at a certain time and place some weather events are common and summer extraordinary your weather mostly depends on where you live sometimes the weather sometimes the weather is sunny changing weather weather is constantly changing it can be sunny in the morning and in the afternoon it can rain or even snow changes in the weather or driven by the Sun heat from the Sun warms the air and it can also warm water in puddles lakes rivers and oceans the water cycle includes how ground water that soaks into the years evaporate then condenses and falls again as rain sleet snow or hail why do you keep moving from the ground to the air and back again when the sun heats water the water turns into tiny droplets the droplets rise High into the air and become cold many drops together from clouds that will fill with water the drops of water than fall back to the Earth as rain snow sleet or hail the sun eventually heats up the water in the cycle starts again chapter 2 thunderstorms sometimes warm when are amazed cooler dryer when this happens blue skies become dark and gray and white puffy clouds turn into long dark clouds Thunder rumbles the drops of water get too cold and heavy to stay in the cloud any longer and Rain begins to fall what happens in a thunderstorm too much rain can cause a dangerous flood a great flow of water over land that is normally dry plants need rain to live but too much rain is harmful to them strong winds and rain can harm people too but can cause damage to buildings and Roads heavy rains can cause a flood lightning thunder storms have lightning lightning is a spark of electricity it looks like a flash of light lightning happens when an electrical charge builds up in the storm cloud the electrical energy needs to find a way out it follows a path to the ground or to another Cloud lightning can be dangerous if lightning strikes is reimage break break the trees branches or start a fire this tree was struck by lightning chapter three tornadoes in some thunderstorm strong spin in a circle when this happens a tornado my farm tornadoes are strong storms with powerful funnel clouds they can begin over land or water and are made out of clouds dust dirt and water it strongly blow in a tight Circle these spinning Winslow very fast they can blow more than 500 km about 300 miles an hour in a very dangerous a tornadoes winds can pick up cars and break windows and walls a tornado even pull up a large tree tornadoes are powerful but they don't last long most tornadoes only exist for a few minutes scientist who study weather watch for tornadoes with radar then they can warn people when a tornado is coming a tornadoes winds are so strong it can even move cars chapter 4 hurricanes hurricanes are powerful storms that begin over the ocean they are similar in some ways what hurricanes are much larger and move slower than tornadoes they can be hundreds of miles wide hurricane winds are strongest near the middle of the storm someone's can blow more than 250 km 155 miles an hour the more heat there is no water the stronger the hurricane can grow that is why the hurricane season comes in summer and Early Autumn each year scientists measure hurricane strength by the speed of the store twins this damage was caused by Hurricane lost her kids come with a lot of rain and sometimes cause floods a hurricane moves across miles of water much further than a tornado can travel when a hurricane does lands the winds begin to die out all those storms although strong storms can do damage most weather is not harmful many days are calm and sunny on this day if you can play outside you can take a walk or you can ride your bike you can enjoy the weather
